According to the Webster County Office of Emergency Services, Stephen Cogar, 22, was killed in an early morning fire Monday at the Division of Highways headquarters in Webster County.
According to reports, Webster County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene at approximately 2:41 a.m. after receiving two 911 hang-up calls from a cell phone registered to Cogar.
Officials said Cogar was found in the building by emergency reposnders. Personnel began life-saving procedures and was then transported to Webster Memorial Hospital. Cogar later succumbed to his injuries at WMH, according to reports.
Units responding to the scene included Webster Springs VFD, Diana VFD, Cowen VFD, Webster Memorial EMS, West Virginia State Police, and the Webster County Sheriff’s Department.
Gov. Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice issued the following statement today upon learning of the death:
“Cathy and I are heartbroken upon learning of the death of a West Virginia Division of Highways worker early this morning during a fire at the DOH Headquarters in Webster County. It’s tragic to lose one of our state employees, especially one so young. We ask all West Virginians to join us in praying for the family, friends and co-workers of this young man.”
No other information is available at this time, however, the state fire marshal’s office continues to investigate the scene.
