Old, White and Not Republican

I get accused of being a Republican often. I can assure you that I am not. Maybe it’s because I’m a white male in my 50s. I’m 53. I’m not sure that’s old but it’s probably getting there.

I realized on November 4, 1980, the day we elected Ronald Reagan, the government would never be there for me and would not take care of me in times of need or old age. I was 15. Since that day there have been several times I could have used some help from the government but it has never been forthcoming beyond living in what we love to refer to as the “freest and greatest” nation ever. In all honestly that putrid stack of horse crap stinks to high heaven.

We aren’t the only country with freedom in the world and we certainly aren’t the only country that’s great. I know… I must be a communist to say such a horrible thing about country that doesn’t take care of its veterans; hate abortions but won’t fund social programs for hungry children and hate immigrants though there is not one white American with family roots tied exclusively to the region we call the United States.

What we can boast is, of all the major industrialized nations, America is the most obese; America has the highest divorce rate in the world by a good margin; more people have been diagnosed with mental disorders in America than anywhere else; and the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world and the largest total prison population on the entire globe.

That’s just a few of our “great” accomplishments. How about some that are not so great. There are more reported rapes in the United States each year than anywhere else in the world; there are more reported murders in the United States each year than anywhere else in the world; and  the United States has the highest rate of illegal drug use on the entire planet.

This is my favorite…

The United States spends 7 times more on the military than any other nation on the planet does.  In fact, U.S. military spending is greater than the military spending of China, Russia, Japan, India, and the rest of NATO combined.

And what exactly are you Evangelicals doing about this one since your “God anointed” Trump came to office… more pornography is created in the United States than anywhere else on the entire globe.  89 percent is made in the U.S.A. and only 11 percent is made in the rest of the world.  But I guess that is to be expected when your President bangs porn stars and pays them off.

We aren’t the America of our fathers and grandfathers. We aren’t even the America of our childhood… for those of us in our 50’s anyway. We are now an America full of paranoid, delusional nut bags from both major parties whose only goal is to stop the other party at any cost possible even if that cost is our country.

Once we were a nation of people who weren’t afraid to work for a better life. We didn’t expect things to be handed to us for nothing. We weren’t afraid of immigrants. We welcomed them because they came here for a a chance at a better life.

Now, sadly, we are the world’s bully pushing other or attempting to push other countries around. We cut off aid to the starving just to show we are the top dog. We turn the hungry away. We don’t feed our own hungry.

If we all took a nice collective deep breath and removed our heads from our asses we could start a new path to being the greatest nation on earth. Until then we’ll just keep bickering on Facebook while the world passes us by.  And that’s a very dangerous thing.
